Coalition to Salute America's Heroes Providing Emergency Aid to Severely Wounded Troops and Their Families in Crisis PO Box 96440 Washington, DC 20090 I'm sure you'll be just as shocked as I was at the latest government statistics on GIs and veterans who have become homeless. On any given night, 194,254 homeless people are America's veterans, including disabled servicemen and women who've just returned from Iraq or Afghanistan! Thank God the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes is doing something about it: Please click here to make an emergency donation to the Coalition's "Bring Them In From The Street" campaign. Your gift will help us provide emergency financial aid to disabled heroes facing evictions, as well as those facing utility cutoffs and other financial disasters. You'll also be able to send a Fourth of July THANK YOU and GET WELL card to cheer up a severely wounded serviceman or woman and show them your patriotic support. My name is Major General John K.Singlaub U.S. Army (Ret.), and I'm writing to you on behalf of the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes. The Coalition is a nonprofit organization founded in 2004 to provide emergency financial and other aid for troops who have been severely wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan. Through the generosity of supporters across America, the Coalition has responded with emergency financial aid to more than 11,000 requests from severely wounded troops and their families facing crises such as home foreclosures, evictions and disconnection of their heat or hot water. Even so, the government statistic I cited above – 194,254 homeless GIs and veterans – hit me like a cold slap in the face. I just can't believe so many GIs who have sacrificed for our country may be left out in the street and that others are facing a cutoff of their water, electricity or air conditioning during the scorching summer heat. This statement from one news article really set me off: "Younger veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan are trickling into shelters and soup kitchens seeking services, treatment or help with finding a job." Shelters and soup kitchens? What in the world is going on here?? Many of these younger veterans have small children. They've risked their lives and limbs serving our country. And now they won't even have a roof over their head . . . or a meal to eat? The government claims it's doing whatever it can to help. But obviously that's not enough. The bottom line is these desperate servicemen and women are counting on you and other patriotic Americans to"throw them a lifeline." I know you support the troops, so the day we celebrate America's independence is the perfect time to help our servicemen and women who have been severely wounded while defending our freedom. So please, CLICK HERE and rush a donation to emergency financial relief to a severely wounded soldier, sailor, airman or Marine who is facing the humiliating prospect of ending up out in the street after being wounded serving our nation. Some are facing other life-threatening problems as a result of the sizzling summer heat. For example, Tony Covell, an Army Reservist from Traverse City, Michigan, suffered third-degree burns over 42 percent of his body after his 5,000-gallon fuel tanker was hit by a roadside bomb in Iraq. When he returned his hometown had just been hit by a 100- degree heat wave. Unfortunately, Tony's air conditioner had just broken down, and he had no money to fix it. "Because of the burns you don't perspire as much, and your body heat rises," he said. "Same with the cold – your skin just dries out." Coalition donors came to the rescue and rushed him $4,500 for a new central air conditioning unit, saving Tony from a potentially severe medical problem. The fact is that for a severely burned, crippled, blinded or brain-damaged GI, a broken-down air conditioner, utility cutoff or eviction during 100- degree heat in June, July or August can literally be a matter of life and death. That's why we're relying on patriotic Americans like you to click here and send a generous contribution to the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes today. You'll also be able to send a Fourth of July THANK YOU and GET WELL card to cheer up a severely wounded serviceman or woman and show them your patriotic support. These severely wounded soldiers sacrificed a lot for this country. Giving them a helping hand during this tough time in their lives is one small way to honor that sacrifice and let them know they haven't been forgotten. Thank you and may God bless you. Sincerely, Major General John K. Singlaub U.S. Army (Ret.) P.S.
